The Blue Bulls Company (BBCo.) is happy to announce the arrival of English lock, Charlie Ewels, on a short-term loan from Premiership club, Bath. Ewels – captain of the Somerset-based side – has been added to the Vodacom Bulls Currie Cup roster until the conclusion of the 2023 campaign.
The 27-year-old is a product of his club’s academy, having climbed through the various ranks in a career that has spun over 14 years at The Recreation Ground. Since 2014, the towering lock has made more than 140 appearances for his club, a time which has also seen him win the under-20 IRB Junior World Championship and under-20 Six Nations Championship for England. Ewels is also an accomplished international player, having made his senior national debut for England back in 2016.
The Bournemouth native said he looks forward to his limited period in South Africa, spending time at the home of one of his most admired players, Victor Matfield.
“I am extremely excited and grateful to be here. It is a really exciting opportunity to be experiencing a new country and different competition. I want to soak up as much as I can whilst I’m in Pretoria before returning to Bath,”
“I’m looking forward to learning as much as I can and playing again after a long rehab process and hopefully, I can share some ideas that add to the Vodacom Bulls campaign.”
BBCo. Chief Executive, Edgar Rathbone said Ewels’ experience and leadership were a welcomed addition at Loftus.
“It is great to have a player of Charlie’s calibre join us. He is an acclaimed international player who has earned the respect of many of his peers and his 30 caps for England account for an experience that will surely benefit our squad on and off the field. He is an exceptional line-out and defensive operator, and we look forward to seeing him add value in our second row,”
“We may only have him for a short while but a player of his calibre can be the difference in an instant and we look forward to seeing him run out in our club colours.”
