At first glance, the Vodacom Bulls’ four defeats in six Carling Currie Cup matches may seem disappointing. But beneath the surface lies a story of ambition, resilience, and youth development in the face of extraordinary circumstances.

Coach Phiwe Nomlomo acknowledges the setback of being out of title contention, but stresses the bigger picture and the hard realities that shaped their campaign.

A strong start with a 44-man squad was met with a harsh reality late in the campaign, as a series of injuries and call-ups left the Bulls with just 22 available players. This depletion of resources made it incredibly difficult to maintain a consistent rhythm.

Despite this, Nomlomo is proud of the opportunity given to youth, with 21 players making their debuts, including 17 juniors and five club players.

“Many young players got to experience playing alongside Springboks and learned how to overcome tough times,” he says.

The realities of fielding a young squad, often younger and less physically developed than seasoned pros, led to struggles with momentum and match fitness.

Yet their veteran leaders provided the necessary stability and inspiration.

Jeandre Rudolph’s try-scoring instincts provided sparks, captain Nama Xaba’s leadership and Marvin Orie’s reliability anchored the side, with Zak Burger’s consistency and Boeta Chamberlain’s professionalism giving the youngsters a steadying influence. Chief among the rookies was JJ Theron, the loose forward, who never let up from week to week.

Nomlomo is realistic but optimistic: “In two years, we may say thank goodness. Many of these guys will be aged 22 or 23 and have close to 30 Vodacom Bulls caps.”

With perseverance, investment in youth, and harsh lessons learned this season, the Bulls’ journey is less about immediate glory and more about building a resilient, experienced squad capable of competing at the highest level in coming seasons.

This Currie Cup was not about silverware but about seeding the future. For Nomlomo, the defeats sting, but the bigger victory may only be measured in two years’ time when today’s rookies are seasoned Bulls.

This season was thus not a failure; it was a foundational step towards a more experienced and resilient squad for seasons to come.
