The legacy of one of Loftus Versfeld’s most influential architects was celebrated on Friday with the formal donation of a detailed scale model of the iconic stadium to the Blue Bulls Company.
The model, originally on display in the office of renowned architect Ockie Spruyt, was handed over by his family during a small ceremony held in front of the stadium’s main grandstand. The event brought together representatives of the Spruyt family, Blue Bulls leadership, and members of the broader Loftus community.
Measuring 148cm by 80cm, the model was built by Spruyt’s son, Jan Spruyt, now an architect based in Windhoek, while he was still a student working in his father’s architectural firm, BSSC Architects.
The donation not only preserves an important piece of Loftus history, but also honours the profound contribution Ockie Spruyt made to the stadium over several decades. As lead architect and head of a multi-disciplinary professional team, Spruyt played a central role in shaping the modern Loftus Versfeld through major developments spanning 25 years. These included the construction and upgrades of the main, north, south, and east pavilions between 1977 and 1994.
Beyond these landmark projects, his work extended to numerous enhancements across the stadium, from facilities and seating improvements to media areas, hospitality spaces, and structural upgrades that contributed to Loftus’ reputation as one of South Africa’s premier rugby venues.
In a personal tribute, long-time colleague and friend Johan Snyman described Spruyt as a gifted architect and a man of integrity whose influence extended far beyond his professional achievements. Their partnership spanned more than five decades, during which Spruyt played a leading role in the planning and development of the “new” Loftus in the 1970s, one of the most significant projects of his career.
Snyman also highlighted Spruyt’s humility, dedication, and lasting impact, noting that he was not only a skilled professional but also a supportive colleague and valued friend.
The handover of the model serves as both a symbolic and tangible link between Loftus Versfeld’s past and future. Now entrusted to the Blue Bulls Company, it stands as a lasting tribute to the vision and craftsmanship that helped shape the stadium into a sporting landmark.
