The Vodacom Bulls and the entire South African rugby fraternity are united in deep sorrow following the passing of former Springbok Women’s and Isuzu Bulls Daisies captain Lusanda Dumke. Dumke, a trailblazer for women’s rugby in this country, tragically lost her courageous battle with cancer on December 16 at the age of 29.

In recognition of her remarkable contribution to the sport and her inspirational legacy, President Cyril Ramaphosa has given his full approval for a special provincial funeral in her honour. The Eastern Cape Government, with the President’s endorsement, will accord Dumke a Category 2 provincial funeral, reflecting her outstanding service to South African rugby and the nation.

The funeral will take place on Sunday, December 28, beginning with a private family service early in the morning, followed by a public ceremony in KwaCentane, Eastern Cape, where players, friends, family and supporters will gather to pay their final respects.

Dumke’s rugby journey was defined by leadership, resilience and passion. She earned 33 Test caps for the Springbok women, captained the national side on multiple occasions and was widely admired for her physicality, tactical intelligence and unyielding commitment.

At provincial level, she served as captain of the Isuzu Bulls Daisies, guiding the team to unprecedented success, including multiple Women’s Premier Division titles that helped elevate the profile and competitiveness of the women’s game in South Africa.

Messages of condolence have poured in from across the rugby community. SA Rugby President Mark Alexander hailed Dumke as “a symbol of courage, leadership and resilience far beyond her years,” noting her extraordinary work ethic and selfless commitment to the sport.

Springboks captain Siya Kolisi, fellow players and coaches have also paid tribute, celebrating Dumke not only for her on-field brilliance but for the inspiration she provided to young athletes, especially girls aspiring to follow in her footsteps.

President Ramaphosa’s approval of the provincial funeral underscores the impact Dumke had not just within rugby, but across South African sport and society. Her leadership, tenacity and commitment to uplifting young players remain a powerful testament to her character.

As flags fly at half-mast in the Eastern Cape on the day of her funeral and the nation reflects on her life and career, the Bulls family and rugby supporters nationwide honour a true legend, one whose legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
