The Vodacom Bulls have penned utility back Devon Williams on a permanent deal that will see the 31-year old remain at Loftus Versfeld for the next 3 years.

Williams was initially on loan – from the Pumas – in a deal that would have run until the beginning of the Currie Cup campaign. He will now remain in the capital through to 2027. Since joining the Tshwane-based outfit, he has gone on to impress in both the Vodacom United Rugby Championship and the Investec Champions Cup respectively, proving to be a vital cog in the backline whether be it running at full-back or on the wings.

Director of Rugby, Jake White said: “There is a lot of talent in South Africa. He is 31, has a young child, a degree and comes from a good school so he has the pedigree. He has won the Currie Cup and with that experience he (really) is a great asset to our group, adding great value, off the field as well,”

“He can play in multiple positions, has served his time and he is at the time of his career where it is the best time for us to get him, for me, it is a no-brainer. We love that we have the youngsters coming through our team but it is good to also have a mature guy like Devon added to the mix.”

Williams says the opportunity to set up a base in the capital and stability for his young family was important to his decision-making.

“”Three years gives me and my family security, we know that we will be in one place for the next three years. It was also a no brainer for me to sign with a big union, to compete with the best and playing against the best as you measure yourself against the best. Playing in the Vodacom URC, a massive competition, allows you to play more rugby throughout the whole year,”

“I have enjoyed my time with the team, I have slotted in very easily. I know most of the guys having played against them for a while now, so I am making deeper connections now. I have my time here, spending time with the boys, especially on tour. I have been a part of the family for a while now and that speaks part of the culture at the Vodacom Bulls,”

Devon had fond words to share with his former team and the Pumas support base: “I owe them a lot, they gave me an opportunity when no one wanted me, they moulded me. I have so much love for the fans and will always have a special place in my heart for them. It is a sad goodbye as much as it is exciting as I move to the Capital. To the coaching staff, the fans and everyone there, it is sad to say goodbye and we will miss you but this is the time for my family to begin a new chapter. Thank you for everything.”
