The Vodacom Bulls will join other Vodacom United Rugby clubs in observing a moment’s applause before kick-off against Cardiff Rugby, in round 9 of the 2022/23 United Rugby Championship on Saturday 03 December 2022, at Loftus Versfeld Stadium. The moment’s applause will mark the passing of Doddie Weir.

Weir, who played for the Border Reivers in the early days of the Celtic League, was a celebrated Scottish international, who won 61 caps for his country and was selected for the British & Irish Lions tour to South Africa in 1997. In the club game Weir also wore the colours of Melrose and Newcastle Falcons, where he won an English Premiership title in 1998.

A marvellously popular character in rugby, Weir was diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease in 2017 which led to him making a far greater impact away from the pitch. He established My Name’5 Doddie Foundation to fundraise and support MND research with the hope that in the future others would have a greater chance of overcoming the disease.

Today and across the weekend the Vodacom United Rugby Championship are encouraging fans to support My Name’5 Doddie Foundation by joining Doddie Aid – a mass participation virtual exercise challenge.

As the Vodacom Bulls, we encourage all of our rugby community to join us in a moment’s applause to remember Doddie and celebrate his contributions on and off the pitch.
