What does Vodacom Bulls hooker Schalk Erasmus and the legendary Bulls lock forward Frik du Preez have in common.
Well both of them are gifted goalkickers with Du Preez always on hand to slot over attempts at goal during his playing hey day.
However, the exciting youngster Erasmus last kicked a penalty back in 2011 while representing the Limpopo Blue Bulls at the U13 Craven Week at Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool, his future high school.
Limpopo were never expected to make the unofficial final but a good run saw them do just that, the Limpopo boys being pitted against a strong Western Province side.
Losing 5-6 with two minutes to go, Limpopo were awarded a penalty goal and it was Erasmus who confidently nodded to his captain and lined up a relatively difficult kick.
Needless to say, Erasmus split the uprights to hand Limpopo the most unlikeliest wins and sketched his name in the annuals of junior South African rugby.
Erasmus would go on to represent DHL Western Province, FNB Maties and the Junior Springboks early on in his professional career but the lure of Loftus Versfeld proved to be too strong and Erasmus returned to his home, not a location but a professional environment that made his heart beat just a little faster.
