After South African clubs debuted in EPCR competitions last season, we’re taking a look at some of the players who enjoyed standout campaigns and will be seeking to make a further impression in 2023/24.
Wandisile Simelane is one to keep an eye on in the 2023/24 Champions Cup after four stellar performances in last season’s competition.
The centre will be integral for Vodacom Bulls as they return to EPCR’s elite tournament for a second season, taking on Saracens, Union Bordeaux-Bègles, Bristol Bears, Connacht Rugby and Lyon in Pool 1.
Simelane finished at the top of several individual statistics for Vodacom Bulls in his debut Heineken Champions Cup campaign.
The 25-year-old made more metres (340), offloads (five) and clean breaks (five) than any of his teammates as the Pretoria-based side reached the Round of 16.
Vodacom Bulls’ progression to the knockout stage was aided by a superb try brace from Simelane against Exeter Chiefs in Round 2.
His first score in the first half came after an incredible kick and gather, before he went over with 10 minutes to go courtesy of an opportunistic interception as Vodacom Bulls crushed the 2020 champions.
