The Vodacom Bulls’ Carling Currie Cup race is run after they were beaten 44-5 at Ellis Park on Saturday afternoon.
There was no little effort from the visitors in this Jukskei derby, but the combined effects of suffocating defence and the Lions loading their side with URC players proved telling.
The Vodacom Bulls’ scrummaging was encouraging and they probed hard, despite much less possession, only to be stone-walled by the Lions whose attack was also on song.
The Bulls might have lost for the fourth time in this tournament, but their effort was commendable with players like Simphiwe Matanzima, Bryan le Roux, captain Nama Xaba, Sintu Manjezi and Chris Barend Smit toiling hard against stern opposition.
There was an early try for flyhalf Jaco van der Walt, but such openings were rare at Ellis Park as the Lions shut up shop.
The Bulls rang the changes on the hour mark, but this had little impact as the Lions maintained their pressure to run out comfortable winners.
